Jamaica Tallawah (slang word meaning strong) illustrates a dancehall artist in which the genre’s roots rose out of the country’s struggles, giving voice to the voiceless. Dancehall music, also called ragga or dub, originates in the political turbulence of the late 1970s and became Jamaica’s dominant music in the 1980s and ’90s.
