Thailand Longtail illustrates the nation’s traditional long-tail boats, originally made from merawan, a dense, seawater resistant and durable wood. According to folklore, the merawan tree is protected by a female guardian spirit known as nang ta-khian, or the grandmother of boats. The fishermen decorate and adorn their boats to appease her.
